Putting neuroscience and psychology to work – Understanding of how the brain works is increasing each day with advances in science and technology, where will it lead us in 20 years time? Wearable technology will be coming soon, how many of us have fitbits that monitor what we do, our heart rate or how many steps we take? Imagine once that technology arrives how we might use it to monitor how staff are feeling, when they are low or in need of a hug or a boost, if only we could read their neurons of the brain and look into their oxytocin levels?
Deliberate conscious thinking versus habitual thinking – How often do you find yourself sitting in the same place on the bus or in a conference room on day 2? Do you have a fixed or growth mindset? There is some interesting research by Carol Dweck on the substantial differences of our mindsets and beliefs and how you might use this insight when coaching others. There is such a thing as the adult brain being plastic (neuroplasty) and able to expand and grow, if you use it and you develop it you can expand your knowledge and skills, the process is there for the brain to change, you just need the motivation. So for employees it is trying to establish what motivates them, changing their limiting beliefs and encouraging them to learn continuously. Remember our brains need food (glucose is ideal) so keep the neuron pathways open, constantly feed your brain, be aware of the pre-frontal cortex dips in the day.
How do we manage cognitive workloads? – These are all true! Did you know the brain has about 80,000 thoughts a day and for the brain this thinking is equivalent to doing and the brain is 20% more active when we are asleep compared to when we are awake, so ensure you and your staff are getting at least 7.5 hours sleep to ensure peak performance! The brain is also 3-4 times more likely to see external change as a threat than a reward so think about how you communicate and manage change in your organisation. Challenge, exercise and a healthy diet can all help the brain to generate and repair neurons, so trying new and different things such as learning an instrument can be hugely beneficial, staying active and social when you retire can help hold back dementia, so encourage older employees to do mental exercises.
